Description

Marketed as "white bronze" grave markers, zinc markers such as this were quite popular in the late 19th to early 20th century. In addition to the distinctive blue tint that makes them relatively easy to spot in cemeteries, they also exhibit a high level of detail unique for markers of this age.

Photographed at Green Hill Cemetery, Martinsburg, West Virginia USA

I see the popular "broken rose" motif, signifying life stopping while in it's prime. Lovely capture! I've recently discovered "white bronze" zinc monuments while on a tour of Sleepy Hollow cemetery yesterday in Tarrytown, NY - Our tour guide talked to us all about the company who manufactured the memorials in CT, the outposts where monuments were finished and shipped from, and varying attitudes toward them by the community and by cemeteries. I personally think they look pretty decent and am now searching more zinc grave markers in my area. Next stop: Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn!
