I think this is one of the most incredibly sad headstones I've encountered. What was the story behind this family's tragedy?

Shortly after posting this image we heard of the tragedy of a family here in Maryland, where the father took the lives of his wife and three children before taking his own. I know the pastor of the faith community they belong to as well as having worked with youth ministers there. Our prayers are with them.
100 years from now, will others wonder about their tragedy?

Perhaps a cholera or flu epidemic? 1856 must have been a bad year. Perhaps a natural disaster in the city? Flood nearby?
It is too sad to imagine - - in 1924 my grandparents lost their first 2 children (aged 9 and 5) within weeks of each other to spinal meningitis and diphtheria. I was always told that the doctor instructed my grandfather to get my grandmother pregnant again as soon as possible so that she wouldn't go mad with grief. Good thing grandpa listened - - my dad was born in 1925!
